The garden, a symphony of color and light, had known only peace. But as the soul tended to a rose whose petals held the warmth of a sunrise, a discordant note shivered through the air.
A shadow, cool and silent, fell across the vibrant blooms. It was not a shadow cast by any object, but a being in its own right, a creature of pure, silent darkness that seemed to drink the light from the air.
The new soul looked up from the rose, its own light flickering with a sensation it had never known: surprise, and a faint tremor of unease. The shadow-being did not move, but the soul felt a gaze upon it, a focused, intelligent presence that was not merely observing, but seeing.
Slowly, a tendril of darkness extended from the shadow-being, reaching out to touch the rose the soul had been tending. Where it made contact, the vibrant crimson of the petals instantly faded to a brittle, ashen grey, the life-giving light within it seemingly extinguished.
A pang of loss, sharp and clear, pierced the new soul’s consciousness. It did not recoil in fear, but instead, reached out its own hand, a vessel of pure light, and gently touched the blighted petals, attempting to coax the lost color back into existence.
