The first cell was a revolution, but it was a solitary one. It was a self-sufficient island of complexity in a sea of simpler forms. For a long time, the story of life was the story of these individual cells, each a self-contained universe, competing and coexisting, but fundamentally alone.
But the pattern of ’how, together’ was not finished. It was about to scale up.
After a cell replicated, the two new cells would normally drift apart, each beginning its own solitary journey. But then, a new mutation occurred. After replication, the two cells remained attached, bound by a subtle, sticky extension of their membranes.
When they replicated again, the four remained attached. And then the eight, and the sixteen.
It was the first community. A multicellular organism.
At first, it was just a clump, a colony of identical cells, each performing the same functions, their proximity offering little more than a slight advantage in numbers. There was no leader, no plan, no specialization. It was simply a group, a ’we’ of proximity.
But the foundation had been laid. The universe had discovered the principle of adhesion, of staying together after the act of creation. The lonely islands were beginning to connect, to form the first continents of life. The next great chapter, the story of specialization and cooperation within a single body, was now ready to be written. The journey from a collection of ’I’s to a unified ’we’ had begun.
